Mencius is one of the greatest Chinese Confucian Classics, which has made an extraordinary impact on traditional Chinese culture. Since the Yuan Dynasty, Mencius was selected as part of the Imperial Examination contents. Based on the text of Mencius, numerous Chinese idioms were formed. Those idioms not merely illustrate the core value systems of Confucianism; they are also widely used in the Chinese society for both daily conversations and literary works. However, the structure and meaning of those idioms have changed over time. This seminar will discuss some documentary evidence, including Chinese classic texts, scholars’ commentaries and contemporary literatures so as to investigate whether the new forms of the idiom can work well and exist together with the original one successfully.

All Are Welcome!
