For centuries, a wide spectrum of opinions held by linguistics on the nature of Chinese characters has long existed. The main root of the difference originates from the influence of western linguistic theories which overlook the uniqueness of Chinese characters and Chinese language. Western linguistics holds the ideology that language is a system of symbol and that characters which are affiliated to language is a symbol of recording language. However, Indo-European language and Chinese language differ distinctively in terms of their nature. In Chinese language, Chinese characters are symbols not only recording language, but also recoding ideology. Through assessing the relationship among symbol, language and writing system, this seminar is to lift the veil of the parataxis in Chinese language and characters should be considered as the nature of Chinese characters.
