School of Chinese Symposium “The CUV Bible and Bible Translations in Chinese”

Sponsors:
School of Chinese, University of Hong Kong
Institute for China and Global Development, University of Hong Kong
Hong Kong Truth Book Room, Hong Kong
Taiwan Gospel Book Room, Taiwan
Asian Research Center, U.S.A.

Date: 7 December 2019 (Saturday)

Time: 9:00 am – 18:30 pm

Venue: G03-05 Main Building, University of Hong Kong

Description and Themes:
The CUV is considered a milestone in Chinese translation of the Bible. First published in 1919, it has played a significant role in the growth of Chinese Christianity through the 20th century. Despite voluminous studies done by scholars in the past decades, more research is needed to explore a series of interrelated key issues, including the historical formation of the CUV Bible, its language, terminology, and translation principle, the overlaps and gaps between the CUV Bible and major biblical translations by Protestant and Catholic missionaries in China, as well as the revised edition of the CUV at the beginning of the 21st century. This symposium is therefore aimed to provide a platform for leading scholars in this field to further study and re-evaluate the CUV in the history of Bible translations into Chinese.

A total of 12 paper presentations, alternatively in English and Chinese, will be given by scholars from U.S., Europe, Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, focusing on the following major themes:

  • Contextual Studies: The CUV and Chinese Language
  • Contextual Studies: Revision, Publication, and Circulation
  • Textual Studies: Translation and Comparison

This presentation examines the phonology of Sāng Shàoliáng’s (fl. 1543-1581) Qīngjiāo zázhù [Compilation from the Qīngjiāo studio]. Sāng Shàoliáng compiled his book in an effort to provide a phonology that broadly reconciles northern and southern Mandarin pronunciations, primarily as a guide to versification. Because Sāng was from the area of Northern Héběi, his work is also often thought to represent a form of the Guānhuà koinē of the time. However, such a characterization has been disputed, as Sāng’s phonology contains idiosyncratic elements and layers that could not have been widely used in the Míng Mandarin koinē. Careful analysis of the phonology in Sāng’s book reveals that in fact it was directly based on a type of Shānxī dialect, a variety that is spoken in the region where Sāng spent a large portion of his professional and family life. We thus have a detailed guide for operatic enunciation by an author of the Jìn region who also wrote at least one Míng play: Dúlèyuán 獨樂園 [Garden for secluded contentment]. This presentation will outline Sāng’s Shānxī phonology and explore whether or not that phonology can be discerned in the rhyming used in the songs in his one surviving play.

The Pidgin Warrior: Zhang Tianyi’s Satire

David N.C. Hull (Washington College, Maryland)

Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus
Language: English

Satire is a most frustrating topic for analysis, not because it is rare or unimportant, but because there are so few things about satire that can be said with consistent confidence. Satire, more than most narrative devices, makes the reader explicitly central to the meaning of the text. This of course, only adds to the contention of meaning.

Set in decadent, cosmopolitan Shanghai at the onset of the Japanese invasion, Zhang Tianyi’s (張天翼 1906-1985) 1936 novel The Pidgin Warrior (洋涇浜奇俠) provides images of nationalism, modernism, and globalism for ridicule in ways that still resonate today.

David N.C. Hull is an Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. Among his translations are Zhang Tianyi’s novel The Pidgin Warrior and the PEN Award winning Waverings by Mao Dun.

During the Shunzhi and Kangxi reigns in the Qing Dynasty, very distinct forms of identity emerged in the literary world. Contemporary “commoner” (unrecruited scholar) and “official” Masters of the Ancient Prose Style were consciously and explicitly differentiated according to their socio-political roles, thus creating a distinction between “commoners’ prose” and “officials’ prose.” In the early Qing, “commoners’ prose” was substantial enough to keep pace with “officials’ prose” or even overtake it, thus promoting a growth in ancient prose output alongside a downward shift of cultural power in literary circles. It was the shared pursuit of early Qing “commoners” in their theory, criticism, and composition to inject ancient prose with superlative spiritual and moral cultivation, including enhancement of the cultural integrity of “the commoners’ prose” through insertion or infusion of the commoners’ personal integrity. However, after more than a century of struggle, by the Qianlong period the “commoners” had finally lost their battle. Scholar-officials reasserted their hegemony in the literary world, and once again it was their criticism and judgement that dominated trends in literary style, “commoners’ prose” gradually losing its former glory.

白話文的韻味和魅力:談談《金瓶梅》的方言色彩
The Veiled and Alluring Nuance of Dialect in the Language of the Jin Ping Mei

時間 Time: November 19, 2019 (Tuesday), 5:00-6:30pm
地點 Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong

Abstract

Jin Ping Mei, composed in the northern vernacular, is also replete with earthy expressions, double-entendre, and unusual Chinese graphs based on dialect homophony. In this regard it differs strikingly from The Water MarginThe Three Kingdoms, and The Story of the Stone. This situation compels us to explore its linguistic characteristics more deeply and seek out their motivation. We find that the dialect elements reflect the linguistic background of the author. The more obscure and difficult to understand the words are, the more that they reflect the speech of the author’s place of origin. Most readers understand when paishou is written with the graphs for ‘clap’ or the graphs for ‘hands together’. But when obscenities are obscured by their written form, utilizing unfamiliar graphs, they are much harder to figure out. And when an apparently innocuous name conceals an arcane connotation, the reader must utilize phonology and dialect comparison to uncover the interpretation. The language of the Jin Ping Mei, like its title, ‘The Plum in the Golden Vase’, and the appellation of its anonymous author, Xiaoxiaosheng ‘The Merry Fellow’, uses the pretext of playful entertainment, in both delighted laughter and vexed curses, as a means to vent the oppressions weighing on one’s bosom while preserving a cover to protect oneself. The true picture is left to future generations to unwrap.

The Reception of Du Fu in the Chinese and Western Traditions
杜甫在中英世界的接受史

Miss Kwong Yee Yan 鄺爾欣

Date and Time: October 25, 2019 (Fri) 5:30-6:45pm
Venue: Room730, Run Run Shaw Tower
Language: English

This seminar begins with an overview of the reception of Du Fu (712-770) from the Tang to Qing dynasty, with reference to the poet’s representation in major Chinese anthologies of Tang poetry. The first part of the presentation will focus on how and by what standards Du Fu has been variously evaluated and his status as one of China’s greatest classical poets is confirmed in the Chinese tradition. The second part is a survey of the shorter history of Du Fu in the Western world. By examining a handful of influential English translations and their rendering strategies, we form a clearer picture of Du Fu as he is presented to the Western readership and a deepened understanding of further and effective introduction of classical Chinese literature to the rest of the world.

是次研討會將梳理歷代重要的唐詩選本,簡介詩人杜甫 (712-770) 由唐朝至清朝的接受史,並探討在中國文化中杜甫崇高的地位和對其作品的常見闡釋。演講的第二部份會關於杜詩如何進入西方世界和其後的發展史,透過分析具影響力的譯本和所採用的翻譯手法,呈現出一個西方讀者所接觸到的「中國最偉大詩人」,讓我們反思中國古典文學要走向世界的未來路向。

Abstract

The Qing dynasty witnessed the rise of dramas based on real people and events. This talk will focus on the plays that depict the events of deaths and will examine how the literati drew inspiration from public affairs, family history as well as personal affairs to construct local memory and social order. Dr. Chen will investigate how playwrights, through onstage and offstage rituals, transformed the audience’s feelings of outrage, compassion and horror triggered by the events of deaths into moral sentiments consistent with social ideology. The documents of gazetteers, poetry, prose, historical records, and random jottings, along with historical and anthropological approach, will help unravel the social function and cultural context of Qing literati drama.

冷戰與中國民族主義革命:「五四研究」在美國的興起與衰落

Carlos Yu-Kai Lin林毓凱

Language: English

The question of how to interpret the nature of the May Fourth Movement, arguably the most important sociopolitical event of modern China, has been at the center of many debates concerning the development of Chinese history, culture, and politics. Yet the studies of “May Fourth” had increasingly lost its momentum and appeal to the younger generation of scholars in the twenty-first century. Many believe that the movement has been overevaluated and overrated. This talk aims to historicize the development of “May Fourth studies” in the Anglophone world as an example to shed light on the three major challenges that the field faces nowadays: the changing international situation, the limitation of old research methods, and the emergence of new scholarship. The author argues that the rise and decline of “May Fourth studies” is closely related to the Cold War geopolitics and is thus a product of a specific socio-historical context. How to address the new world order and local politics is thus key to the survival of this field.

Chinese Surplus: Biopolitical Aesthetics and the Medically Commodified Body的部分內容為基礎。

In this talk I explore the history of Frankenstein’s monster—in his little-known Chinese afterlife. Sketching out a genealogy of the early Chinese translation of the idea of Frankenstein (which actually preceded the translation of Mary Shelley’s famous book itself), I highlight major shifts in representations of the monstrous body over the last two centuries. Along the way, I trace the unexpected relationship between the cultural translation of Frankenstein and the late nineteenth-century political stereotype of China as a “sleeping lion” made famous by Liang Qichao and others. This talk is based on material from my latest book, Chinese Surplus: Biopolitical Aesthetics and the Medically Commodified Body (Duke UP, 2018), which explores race, aesthetics, and the human body as commodity in the age of biotech.

Abstract

During the first half (618-766) of the Tang dynasty, the letter of self-recommendation became a prominent genre for literati seeking official positions. To persuade a potential patron to offer help, authors adopted various rhetorical strategies in such letters. Some of the more striking approaches developed by them will be discussed in this talk, as will the historical context behind the maturation of the genre. Although letters seeking political patronage were a fundamentally practical matter, their features could also be played with and manipulated for literary effect, with some authors fashioning compositions that may even seem audaciously counter-productive. The discussion of Tang self-recommendation letters allows us to further consider the traditional concept of “expressing one’s mind” and the possibility of rewrite the history of Tang literature.

吳方言在明清到20世紀初文學中的影響和共鳴:文本裏的影子和歷史上的圖樣
The impact and resonance of the Wú dialect in the literature of the Míng, Qīng, and early 20th century: textual reflections and patterns of history

The use of the Wú dialect in literary production and composition reached its zenith in the late Míng, though continuing to lesser degrees into the Qīng and the 20th century. The Wú dialect reflected in the literature of the Míng period reveals clear connections to, and continuities with the modern Wú dialects. So our study must begin in the late Míng and any study of the Wú dialect in earlier literature will have to proceed from that foundation. The growth of Wú dialect literature is closely related to the development of the print and publishing industry and the concurrent expansion of readership. The Sūzhōu-Hángzhōu region was an important center of the publishing industry in the Míng and Qīng Dynasties, which saw an explosion of vernacular writing in the dialect. The center of this writing and publication activity moved to Shànghǎi in the second half of the 19th century, and the literature had developed strikingly by the early 20th century, with significant changes to be seen in the genres, content, and nature of Wú dialect literature. We will examine the characteristics of the literary Wú dialects and the history of the dialect and dialect literature in these various historical stages from several vantage points: (1) in terms of characteristic Wú dialect grammatical features, (2) in terms of the Wú dialect lexicon, (3) in terms of Wú dialect use in literary register and textual voice, and (4) how dictionaries and lexical studies can assist us in the analysis.

Abstract:
This talk will explore the user-driven metamorphosis of the popular audiovisual texts in the Chinese context. It will focus on the fan-made video Meeting Sheldon produced by the fandubbing group Huai Xiu Bang in 2014 as their response to the official ban of the sitcom The Big Bang Theory from licensed online broadcast in China. Huai Xiu Bang remixed the disintegrated clips and audio assembled from the original series, while combining them with a newly dubbed soundtrack in Chinese and English. Through pseudo and mock translation and ontological jumps, fan trans-mediators situated the main characters from the original storyworld at the intersections between different narrative worlds and thus created an unnatural narrative that deliberately ridiculed the censorship. The case study will lead to a further discussion on the dynamic form of intermediation in the digital ecology of citizen media. By repurposing commercially pre-distributed storylines, users with sophisticated media literacy are able to breach the boundaries between their own cultural-political realities and the industrial context linked to the original storyworld – all while imposing upon the later their extradiegetic desire to transform the ‘target text’.
