The Qing dynasty witnessed the rise of dramas based on real people and events. This talk will focus on the plays that depict the events of deaths and will examine how the literati drew inspiration from public affairs, family history as well as personal affairs to construct local memory and social order. Dr. Chen will investigate how playwrights, through onstage and offstage rituals, transformed the audience’s feelings of outrage, compassion and horror triggered by the events of deaths into moral sentiments consistent with social ideology. The documents of gazetteers, poetry, prose, historical records, and random jottings, along with historical and anthropological approach, will help unravel the social function and cultural context of Qing literati drama.

Dr. Chen Liangliang is currently a Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. She received her BA in Chinese Literature from Fudan University, MPhil in Chinese Philosophy from HKUST, and PhD in Chinese Literature from CUHK.
