Language Instructors (3 posts)
in the Chinese Language Enhancement Programme (CLEP)
in the School of Chinese
Applications are invited for appointment as Language Instructors (LIs) in the Chinese Language Enhancement Programme (CLEP) in the School of Chinese, tenable from September 1, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis.
One of the primary missions of the CLEP is to equip students with the necessary Chinese language skills for academic and professional pursuits. Tailor-made, discipline-specific practical Chinese language courses are offered to the undergraduates in all Faculties across the University. Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent and a postgraduate degree in Chinese or related areas. The ability to conduct courses in practical Chinese and Chinese Culture is required. Experience in teaching Chinese in local educational settings is a definite advantage. The appointees should have a strong sense of commitment, a track record of excellence in teaching, a capacity for course design and delivery as well as proven pedagogical and presentation techniques.
(A) Language Instructor (Ref.: 201200009) Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in the development and administration of a generally recognized large-scale benchmarking test in written Chinese.
(B) Language Instructor (Ref.: 201200010) Applicants should preferably be native speakers of Putonghua and have a near-native command of Cantonese.
(C) Language Instructor (Ref.: 201200011) Applicants should preferably be native speakers of Cantonese and have near-native fluency in Putonghua.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chinese History and Culture or related areas, and a proven track record of excellence in teaching and be able to complement and reinforce the strengths of the Chinese History and Culture (CHC) Programme and bring additional dimensions to the School’s missions. Possession of expertise in dynastic and modern socio-economic history and the history of material culture is a must. The ability to develop and conduct courses that are consonant with the curricular needs of the Programme and to inspire creative and critical inquiry into vital historical and cultural issues will be a definite advantage. Primary teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate level, but the appointee may also be expected to supervise postgraduate projects. The successful candidate should be well-versed in Practical Translation and Translation Theory.
