Abstract:
As the crowning achievement of classical Chinese historical fiction, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is renowned not only for its celebrated poetry, but also for its inclusion, deployment, and invention of numerous famous fu (rhapsodies), such as The Rhapsody on the Bronze Sparrow Terrace, The Rhapsody on the Great Mist over the River, and The Rhapsody on Dangyang Bridge. For a long time, these stylistically distinct fu compositions have often been dismissed by general readers, and even by some scholars, as narrative “excesses” and consequently skipped over.
This lecture seeks to reexamine these misunderstood “lengthy digressions” and to uncover the intricate relationship of tension, attraction, and mutual influence between fu literature and fictional narrative. From historical inquiry to literary invention, we will explore how Luo Guanzhong employed the art of the fu to illuminate his heroic epic and enrich his storytelling through linguistic artistry. Skip these passages, and you may be missing half of the Three Kingdoms!
