Abstract:

Xi Xi (1937–2022) is known for her extraordinary imagination and distinctive literary style. Her Chinese-language writing draws on Western literary modes such as magical realism and surrealism while remaining deeply rooted in the language, culture, and everyday life of Hong Kong, reflecting the cultural intersections that have long characterised Hong Kong literature. Published in 2009, Fengxiong Zhi brings together prose, photography, and craftwork and occupies a distinctive place in Xi Xi’s creative oeuvre. At its centre are teddy bears sewn by Xi Xi herself, which showcase her ability to move across Chinese and Western cultures, literary genres, and artistic media. Dressed in costumes that she designed and made, the bears take on the identities of figures from Chinese and Western history, literature, and legend, including Zhuangzi, Wang Xizhi, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Chang’e, heroes from Water Margin, and characters from Beauty and the Beast. Photographs of the bears are accompanied by short essays on the figures’ costumes, lives, and stories, drawing widely on literature, history, geography, and philosophy. The result is an unconventional set of “teddy-bear biographies” in which China and the West, the serious and the playful, and the learned and the popular continually intersect.

Taking Fengxiong Zhi as a case study, this talk proposes “defiant hybridity” as a way of understanding Xi Xi’s creative practice. Her hybridity resists fixed categories and singular cultural identities; her defiance lies in the playful freedom with which Xi Xi crosses established boundaries through humour, childlike curiosity, and imagination, moving between cultures, genres, and media. Through Fengxiong Zhi, the talk considers how this “defiant hybridity” reveals a distinctive mode through which Xi Xi understood the world, approached life, and practised literary creation.
