BOOK DESCRIPTION
This book explores the remarkable trend of Christian-Confucian dialogism in the 17th-century encounter between China and the West. It focuses on the mission work of Giulio Aleni (Ai Rulüe 艾儒略 , 1582–1649) in Fujian and the unique eight-volume work Kouduo richao 口鐸日抄 (Diary of Oral Admonitions, 1630–1640) that records daily conversations on a wide range of religious and intellectual topics among the Jesuit masters and Confucian scholars. By examining the mechanisms of dialogue in Kouduo richao and dozens of other Christian works distinguished by a certain dialogue form, the book brings forth a set of new findings beyond the pioneering research of Erik Zürcher (1928–2008) and other scholars. It further highlights the key concept of “dialogic hybridization” as a new approach to help uncover the complex formation of a hybrid Christian–Confucian identity and religious life in late Ming Fujian.
Dr Song Gang is Associate Professor of Chinese History in the School of Chinese, HKU. He has broad interests in the cultural exchanges between China and the West in history, while his research focuses on Catholic Christianity in late imperial China. In addition to the monograph on Christian-Confucian dialogism in late Ming China, he has published an edited volume on the Christian intersection of China and the West in the modern era, as well as numerous articles in leading journals such as Monumenta Serica: Journal of Oriental Studies and Guoji hanxue (International Sinology).
