The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom was deeply influenced by Protestantism. Both its Heavenly King Hong Xiuquan and the Shield King Hong Rengan were proselytized by Western missionaries from the Chinese Union. The latter, founded in Hong Kong by the Prussian missionary Karl F. A. Gützlaff, was the first Chinese Protestant missionary society to train Chinese converts on self-propagation. The official Bible of the Heavenly Kingdom was revised from Gützlaff’s Chinese translation, and published and distributed by the Chinese Union. This presentation re-examines the evolution of this Chinese Bible, exploring rare and almost neglected manuscripts to uncover new information on the Chinese Union's idealised internal structure and approach to propagation.
