Abstract:

Alchemy has been an intriguing subject in the history of Daoism. Existing texts indicate that the first Daoist alchemical treatise was compiled during the late Eastern Han dynasty which is known as the Jiudingdan jing (Scripture of Nine Elixirs). The treatise was an exemplar comparable to the Zhouyi cantong qi (Token for the Agreement of the Three According to the Book of Changes) with profound influence on alchemy. The relationship between Taiqing (Great Clarity) literatures and Daoist alchemy in early medieval China (AD 222–AD 589) was subtle yet inseparable. In fact, the ‘Golden Elixir’ in Baopu zi neipian (Inner Chapters of Book of the Master Who Embraces Simplicity) serves as a crucial chapter which illustrates this relationship. This seminar will explore both Taiqing literatures and Shangqing alchemy.
