Colonial modernity has long been a crucial issue in the studies of colonial Taiwanese literature. However, previous scholarship on this tends to either concentrate on its manifestations in one single text or compare different writers’ attitudes towards it, risking overlooking its continuously changing impact on Taiwanese intellectuals. Born in colonial Taiwan, Wu Zhuoliu (1900-1976) began to write and publish works during the Japanese colonial period. He continued his writing after 1945 when Japanese occupation ended. His works make a salient case study for us to look into the varied reflections on modernity for authors who underwent both colonial and postcolonial eras. This talk will examine the manifestations of colonial modernity in Wu’s novels written in three different periods of his life—before his departure to mainland China, after his return from mainland China to Taiwan, and under the KMT rule—and probe into the continuous impact of colonial modernity on Taiwanese intellectuals who lived through Japanese colonialism.
