Aim:
This roundtable will explore issues regarding colloquial languages in China in relationship to written forms and colloquial literary language. Issues to be considered include: the history of China’s colloquial literary languages; the standard regional languages and prestige dialects of the past; the history of Mandarin and its influence on other dialects; the interplay between historical forms of spoken Chinese and written Chinese; supraregional common languages (koinés), and their relationship to spoken dialects; the nature of texts written colloquial dialect forms.
