Luo Yijun (b.1967) is an acclaimed Taiwanese writer who has been writing novels for more than 20 years. Scholars to date tend to concentrate mainly on his renowned Tangut Inn and his background as a second-generation mainlander writer. Consequently, research on his other books are quite limited in quantity and remain scattered, especially that about Luo’s early works written before Tangut Inn. Luo’s father passed away in 2004. Before that, “father” is always one of the motifs and is especially important in Family of the Moon (2000) and In the Distance (2003). Luo did not stop using this motif until My Future Second Son’s Memories of Me (2005). The relationship between Luo and his father was embarrassing and subtle. Patricidal tension could even be found in Luo’s creative works. Given that “father” plays an important role in Luo’s works and this role has not been studied independently and thoroughly, this talk will focus on the relationship between Luo and his father. It will first trace the formation of the patricidal tension by analysing the novel Family of the Moon. It will then examine Luo’s attempt of patricide in In the Distance. Finally, it will discuss how My Future Second Son’s Memories of Me provides a solution to the patricidal tension. By shifting the perspective from the ethnic, collective level to personal psychological level, this talk offers a new breakthrough point to existing scholarship on Luo. Furthermore, “father” is a part that cannot be neglected when doing psychoanalysis of Luo. This talk aims to pave the way for future research on Luo.
