This seminar begins with an overview of the reception of Du Fu (712-770) from the Tang to Qing dynasty, with reference to the poet’s representation in major Chinese anthologies of Tang poetry. The first part of the presentation will focus on how and by what standards Du Fu has been variously evaluated and his status as one of China’s greatest classical poets is confirmed in the Chinese tradition. The second part is a survey of the shorter history of Du Fu in the Western world. By examining a handful of influential English translations and their rendering strategies, we form a clearer picture of Du Fu as he is presented to the Western readership and a deepened understanding of further and effective introduction of classical Chinese literature to the rest of the world.
