Audiovisual productions have become the quintessential means of communication in the 21st century and, in the era of globalisation, their translation is imperative in order to foster exchanges across languages and cultures. Interest in audiovisual translation (AVT) has been growing steadily and exponentially in the industry, academia and educational centres. This talk will take stock of the main developments that, propitiated by technology and the upsurge of digital platforms, are shaping the new digital ecosystems and propelling subtitling and dubbing to centre stage. The speaker will also highlight some of the changes that are taking place in the actual translation practice, discuss the impact of platformisation in the reorganisation of economic and cultural practices, and speculate about the future outlook of audiovisual translation.

Jorge Díaz-Cintas is Professor of Translation and founding director (2013-2016) of the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London. He is the author of numerous articles, special issues and books on audiovisual translation, including Subtitling: Concepts and Practices (with Aline Remael, 2021). Jorge is a frequent speaker at international conferences and events, and has offered consultant services to the European Parliament, European Commission, NATO, OOONA and Netflix, among others. He is the Chief Editor of the series New Trends in Translation Studies and the recipient of the Jan Ivarsson Award (ESIST, 2014) and the Xènia Martínez Award (ATRAE, 2015) for invaluable services to the field of audiovisual translation.
