Visits to the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole and the University Museum and Art Gallery
On September 20, 2023, the School of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) organized insightful visits to the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole and the University Museum and Art Gallery for its research postgraduate students, academic and administrative staff members. These site-visits aimed to deepen their understanding of the School's rich history and the diverse research fields it encompasses.
We extend our immense gratitude to the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole and the University Museum and Art Gallery for their generous support. Special appreciation goes to the staff of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole, particularly Deputy Directors, Dr. Tang Wai-hung and Mr. Yiu Shek-on, as well as the Project Assistant Ms. Ko Man-yee, who facilitated our access to the invaluable collection of books donated by Prof. Jao.
Our visit included a guided tour of the exhibition "Embracing Landscapes: The Artistic Journey of Professor Jao Tsung-I", held at the University Museum and Art Gallery from July 12 to September 30, 2023. During the tour, they introduced us to the unique features of Prof. Jao's paintings and calligraphy works.
Prof. Jao’s immense contributions span both academia and the realms of culture and art. In his later years, he successfully incorporated techniques from Western landscape painting into his artworks while preserving the essence of Chinese ink painting. Prof. Jao’s works capture the landscapes and scenic spots worldwide that deeply moved him. The exhibition showcased 20 paintings and calligraphic works related to his travels since the 1960s, alongside 50 vintage photographs that commemorated his enduring friendships, profound connections with nature over the past five decades, as well as his long association with the School of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong.
The visits attracted nearly 20 research postgraduate students and staff members from the School of Chinese, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the remarkable academic and artistic accomplishments of the esteemed Master Jao Tsung-I, and to appreciate his unwavering dedication, diligence, and passion.
