CHIN1213 Folklore and Modern Chinese Culture (6 credits)

 

This course is a 6-credit intense summer programme collaboratively offered by the School of Chinese and the Chinese language and Literature Department, Beijing University. It explores a series of prominent aspects in Chinese folklore, including myths, folktales, folk songs, costumes, theatrical performances, architecture, festivals, and customs that in many ways have affected modern Chinese culture and social life. It introduces influential theories in folklore, literature, and cultural criticisms to help students reflect on the essential features of Chinese folk culture and its persistence through China’s social and political transformations in the 20th century. The course also provides students experiential learning of traditional and modern folk culture in Beijing area and North China. Activities include site visits to Beijing Folk Culture Museum, Imperial Academy, Temple of Confucius, Huguang Guild Hall, Cuandixia Village, etc.  

 

This course is one of the “HKU-China 1000 Exchange Scheme” programmes. All class activities, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, and group projects are conducted at PKU. The School of Chinese will coordinate students’ travel from Hong Kong to Beijing, and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature will arrange accommodation, local transportation, etc. in Beijing. The Ministry of Education provides partial financial support, while students need to pay programme fees (prepayment) and airfare (self-booking or group tickets booked by the School of Chinese). They should also prepare travel documents and life/health insurance for the trip.

CHIN1213民俗學與現代中國文化(6學分)

本課為香港大學中文學院與北京大學中文系合作開辦的一門學分制(6學分)暑期強化課程。課程深入探討中國民俗學的重要議題,內容涵蓋神話、傳說、民間故事、史詩與歌謠、民間表演與藝術、建築、服飾以及節慶習俗等,這些元素深刻影響了中國現代文化和社會。課程將介紹民俗學、民間文學和文化批評的相關理論,幫助學生思考中國民俗文化的核心特質,及其在二十世紀中國社會巨變中的傳承與發展。此外,本課結合實地考察,為學生提供實踐學習的機會,加深對北京及華北地區典型民俗文化的理解,從而豐富課堂講授內容。考察地點包括東嶽廟北京民俗博物館、國子監、孔廟、湖廣會館、門頭溝爨底下村等富有代表性的民俗文化遺址。

 

本課為“香港大學千人內地交流計劃”項目,教學活動包括講座、導修、工作坊、小組項目等,全部在北京大學進行。港大中文學院將協調學生赴京行程,留京期間的住宿、交通等方面由北大中文系負責安排。國家教育部為本項目提供部分資助,學生需負擔項目費用(提前預繳)及機票費用(自行購票或由中文學院安排團體購票),也要預先辦理赴內地的旅行證件及保險。
