An Overview of Chinese Translations of Western Learning and China-West Cultural Exchanges in the 17th Century
Abstract:
During the Ming-Qing transition period, with the publication of Chinese books by European missionaries in China and the responses of scholar-bureaucrats who read these books, a new form of literature emerged for the first time in Chinese history, namely Chinese translations on Western Learning. This lecture clarifies the definition and scope of Chinese translations of Western Learning, and sorts out the collections of these works in major libraries around the world. Based on the progress of the collation of Chinese translations of Western Learning in the academic community, this lecture takes the approach of global history and puts forward new prospects for the studies of Chinese translations of Western Learning, thus revealing a new direction in research on the history of cultural exchanges between China and the West.
