Abstract:

This talk explores the critical role of audiovisual translation (AVT) in the globalisation of media productions. As the demand for international content increases, AVT practices such as subtitling, dubbing and access services serve as essential tools for overcoming linguistic, cultural and sensory barriers, enabling media to reach diverse global audiences. By ensuring accessibility for non-native speakers and persons with sensory disabilities, AVT preserves the integrity of original content while adapting it to resonate with local cultures. Special emphasis will be placed on digital streaming platforms, which have amplified the global circulation of media, AVT's significance has only grown, facilitating the seamless distribution of content across markets. This presentation examines how AVT contributes to the widespread dissemination of media and the shaping of a more interconnected global media landscape.

About the Speaker:

Jorge DIAZ-CINTAS is Professor of Translation and founding director (2013-2016) of the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London. He is the author of numerous articles, special issues and books on audiovisual translation, including Subtitling: Concepts and Practices (with Aline Remael, 2021). A pioneer in audiovisual translation, Jorge is a frequent speaker at international conferences and events, and has offered consultancy services to the European Parliament, European Commission, OOONA, Deluxe and Netflix, among others. He is the Chief Editor of New Trends in Translation Studies and the recipient of the Jan Ivarsson Award (ESIST, 2014) and the Xènia Martínez Award (ATRAE, 2015) for invaluable services to the field of audiovisual translation.
