Hong Kong Cinema: Tradition and Modernity
Abstract:
After the fall of Shanghai in 1937, a large amount of southbound literati and filmmakers fled to Hong Kong—a British colony where they produced numerous anti-Japanese propaganda films in Cantonese, commonly known as "national defence films." This seminar starts with this pivotal historical moment and examines how these political propaganda films intersected with the city’s popular culture within a turbulent cultural landscape. The dialectic between Cantonese opera and film, image and sound, tradition and modernity unexpectedly gave rise to diverse cultural imaginations and new creative possibilities. These dynamics not only shaped the development of Cantonese cinema in pre-war Hong Kong but also laid a crucial foundation for the city’s post-war film industry.
