Abstract:

The talk discusses Prof. Wang Zheng’s new Chinese revised edition of her book on the May Fourth feminists, Women in the Chinese Enlightenment: Oral and Textual Histories Situating the May Fourth Feminism in the global context and the locally specific political and cultural dynamics in that historical period, the talk compares the development of Chinese feminism with that of US feminism in the 20th century and highlights the specificities of the history of Chinese feminism. The historical approach to the subject may enable us to reach a deeper understanding of the strengths and constraints of Chinese feminism.
