Abstract:

This presentation examines the making of scientific patriotism of the Science Society of China (SSC) in the early twentieth century. Since 1915, the SSC had been devoted to promoting modern science in China. In addition to mastering modern science knowledge and technologies, the SSC and its members expressed patriotic visions despite changing political climates from the 1910s to the 1930s. During and immediately after the First World War, the Chinese scientists were anxious about the future of China. Many of them aspired to develop China into a strong and wealthy nation by promoting modern science. When the Nationalist government unified the country after the “successful” Northern Expedition, the SSC tried to respond to the calls for nationalism in different ways. Further after the Academia Sinica’s establishment in the late 1920s, the SSC was no longer the authority of science societies in China. How did the SSC and its members adapt to political changes and the calls for state-centered nationalism in the 1930s? Were they still as “free-floating” as they were before the Nationalist government’s establishment? I will use newspapers, books and articles about the SSC and its members to study how these scientists strategically delivered patriotic narratives concerning the changing political climates at that time.
