Abstract:

The late Qing and early Republican periods in China were a confluence of tradition and modernity, shaped by both Chinese and Western influences. As society underwent radical transformation, the arts experienced profound changes. It was during this time that Peking opera gave rise to a legendary performer—Mei Lanfang. Amid the dynastic transition, a group of fans and disillusioned scholars gathered around Mei Lanfang, forming what came to be known as the "Mei Party." For them, the world of Peking opera became a kind of “utopia” in which they could project their emotions and aspirations. The story of Mei Lanfang and the Mei Party not only reflects the broader upheavals of the era but also captures the specific transformations within Peking opera, making it a highly valuable and representative subject for research.
