Abstract:

Hong Kong diasporic poets in Taiwan after 2019 have renewed their engagement with concepts of nostalgia and ghosts in plural ways. This talk starts with Chan Mit’s reading of nostalgia that reflects on its social and ethical dimensions, and invokes a meticulous poetics of “remastering” (復刻) Hong Kong. Hon Ki-chau, Cao Shu-ying, and Liu Wai-tong are poets who summon ghosts to construct a haunting that blurs the boundaries between past, present, and future. By writing about what is no longer, these poets piece together lost fragments of personal and cultural histories; by addressing what is not yet, they grapple with unsettled futures by imagining alternative forms of resistance and resilience in a painful present. By combining methods in Hong Kong Studies with critical theory, I consider how these group of poets/critics engage temporality as a keyword to define the energies of a post-2019 writing community and readership across the globe.
