Chinese Television Culture, Gender and Sexuality, Masculinities in East Asia, Translation and Cross-cultural Studies

Geng Song is Professor in the School of Chinese. He is currently Chair of the Board of the Faculty of Arts and Director of the MA in the Field of Translation (MAT) Programme. He also serves as leader of the Film and Media Communication Pathway of the new Global Creative Industries (GCIN) programme, and as an affiliated professor in the Department of Comparative Literature. He taught in Singapore and Australia for over ten years before joining HKU in September 2012. He received the HKU Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award in 2024–25.

 

Song’s research spans transcultural, transdisciplinary, and transhistorical approaches to gender and identity in Chinese popular culture, with a focus on masculinities, television, and nationalism. His first book, The Fragile Scholar: Power and Masculinity in Chinese Culture (2004), is widely regarded as a pioneering work in Chinese masculinity studies. His second, Men and Masculinities in Contemporary China (co-authored with Derek Hird, 2014), combines media analysis with interviews and ethnographic research to examine changing masculinities in everyday life in mainland China. His latest monograph, Televising Chineseness: Gender, Nation, and Subjectivity (2022), explores how television and web dramas imagine the Chinese nation and shape postsocialist gendered subjects. He is currently developing a new project on how algorithms rewrite history in Chinese digital media.

 

Song’s publications also include edited volumes on Chinese television and transnational Chinese masculinities, a translated anthology of works by China’s post-80s writers, and a number of research articles in such leading journals as Modern ChinaThe China JournalMen and MasculinitiesAsian Studies Review, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies and Nan Nü. He is the recipient of three GRF grants, as well as international collaboration grants from the British Academy, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and the Academy of Korean Studies and has delivered keynote/invited lectures in the UK, Australia, Europe, the USA, and China.

 

Song is the co-editor of a book series on “Transnational Asian Masculinities” by Hong Kong University Press. His research has been widely featured by major international media outlets, such as the South China Morning PostThe GuardianNikki Asian ReviewChina Daily, Radio Australia, and The Straits Times, to name just a few.

 

宋耕是中文學院教授,現任文學院院務委員會主席,以及翻譯文學碩士(MAT)課程總監。他亦擔任新設全球創意產業(GCIN)課程中「電影與媒體傳播」方向的負責人,並為比較文學系兼任教授。2012年9月加入香港大學,曾在新加坡和澳洲任教逾十年。他於2024–25年度獲頒香港大學傑出研究生導師獎。

 

宋教授的研究以跨文化、跨學科和跨歷史的方法,探討中國大眾文化中的性別與身份認同,重點關注男性氣質、電視與民族主義等課題。他的第一本專著《文弱書生》(2004) 被視為中國男性氣質研究的開創性作品。第二本專著《當代中國的男性與男性氣質》(與Derek Hird合著,2014)結合媒體分析、訪談與民族誌研究,考察中國內地日常生活中男性氣質的變遷。他最新的專著《電視中國性:性別、民族與主體性》(2022)探討電視劇與網絡劇如何想像民族,並塑造後社會主義時代的性別化主體。他目前正開展一項新的研究計劃,探討在中國數碼媒體中算法如何重寫歷史。

 

宋教授的研究成果還包括多部中英文編著,以及多篇發表於國際權威期刊的論文。他主持的中國「80後」作家作品英譯項目由夏威夷大學出版社出版,並作為「一帶一路」重點文化項目,翻譯成韓文、西班牙文、塞爾維亞文、克羅地亞文等多種語言。他曾獲三項優配研究金(GRF)資助,並獲英國學術院、加拿大社會科學與人文研究委員會(SSHRC)及韓國學中央研究院頒發國際合作研究資助;他亦曾在英國、澳洲、歐洲、美國和中國發表主題演講及受邀演講。

 

宋教授是香港大學出版社「跨國亞洲男性氣質」叢書的共同主編。他的研究曾獲多家主要國際媒體報道,包括《南華早報》、《衛報》、《日經亞洲評論》、《中國日報》、澳洲廣播電台及《海峽時報》等。
