I joined the University of Hong Kong in 2007. As a student of literature, I am interested in the relationship between literature and cultural identity in both a Chinese and western context. My approach is interdisciplinary and broad-based, often incorporative of topics of literature, history and cultural studies. I publish in both Chinese and English, and am currently an editorial member of The Journal of Chinese Literary Studies (文學論衡) and Journal of Oriental Studies (東方文化). Besides my ongoing investigation on Chinese gastronomy and literary translation, I recently published Monstrosity and Chinese Cultural Identity: Xenophobia and the Reimagination of Foreignness in Vernacular Literature Since the Song Dynasty (Amherst, NY: Cambria, 2020).

I would be interested in supervising on most aspects of literary and cultural studies, with particular interest in translation studies, classical Chinese fiction, East-West cultural exchange since the nineteenth century, and theories of cultural identity. Students who are interested in using English as a medium to research on imperial Chinese literature are also welcome to contact me.
